The story behind
The Wine
Some sporting moments become part of a nation’s history. Others become part of its identity.
In 1966, Sir Geoff Hurst helped deliver one of English football’s greatest achievements, scoring a historic hat-trick in the World Cup Final as England lifted the trophy at Wembley. Sixty years later, that extraordinary moment inspires Cuvée 66, the first release in Lord Ian Botham’s Legend Series — a collection celebrating the sporting greats whose achievements have captured the imagination of generations.
Bringing together two icons of English sport, Lord Botham and Sir Geoff Hurst have teamed up with Balfour Winery in Kent to create an English sparkling wine that commemorates an unforgettable chapter in sporting history.
More than a bottle marking an anniversary, Cuvée 66 sets the tone for The Legend Series: a celebration of legendary people, defining moments and the stories that deserve to be told — and toasted — for years to come.

Discover our
Sporting Connection
Few people understand the thrill of sporting history quite like Sir Geoff Hurst and Lord Ian Botham.
Sir Geoff’s place in football folklore was secured at Wembley in 1966, when his three goals helped England win the World Cup. His hat-trick remains unique in the history of the men’s World Cup Final. Lord Botham, meanwhile, became one of cricket’s most celebrated all-rounders, renowned for his match-winning performances, fearless spirit and ability to turn a game on its head.
Their sports may differ, but the qualities that define their legacies are remarkably similar: courage under pressure, a belief in what is possible and the ability to create moments that live on in the memory.
Cuvée 66 brings these two sporting greats together in a celebration of English achievement. It is a wine with a story to tell — one that invites a new generation to discover the legend, while giving those who remember 1966 another reason to raise a glass.
Exploring the
Vineyard
Balfour Winery, Kent, England
Set in the heart of the Kent countryside, Balfour Winery is one of the names at the forefront of English wine. Its vineyards and winemaking team have helped establish England as a serious producer of elegant, characterful sparkling wines.
For Cuvée 66, the sporting story meets the skill of Balfour’s winemaking team, led by Head Winemaker Fergus Elias. Made using the traditional method, the wine reflects the freshness, precision and finesse that make English sparkling wine so distinctive.
Expect inviting citrus aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit and lime blossom, alongside crisp apple and pear. Time on the lees adds a subtle note of brioche, while vibrant acidity and a fine, persistent mousse bring freshness and elegance. A mineral edge carries through to a long, clean finish.
The result is a sparkling wine made for occasions that deserve to be remembered — from a special dinner to a sporting celebration shared with friends.
