The story behind

The Wine

Sporting Wine Club is proud to be the exclusive UK stockist of the Jean Roi Rosé on behalf of Rupert Wines—a premium blend of Cinsault, Grenache, and Shiraz. Produced at the historic L’Ormarins Estate, Jean Roi is deeply rooted in the rich heritage of South African winemaking. We’re honoured to play a role in sharing this exceptional wine and to be part of the continuing story of one of the country’s most iconic wine estates.

Discover our

Sporting Connection

Johann Rupert, owner of the Rupert Wine Estate, has long-standing and meaningful ties to the world of sport—most notably rugby and golf—making his values a natural fit with the ethos of Sporting Wine Club. In addition to his role as Chairman of Richemont, the parent company behind the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Johann has consistently championed the transformative power of sport in society.

A passionate advocate for sport’s broader impact, he played a pivotal role in founding the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in 1990, which uses the power of sport to uplift disadvantaged youth globally. He also co-founded the Sports Science Institute at the University of Cape Town, further demonstrating his commitment to long-term sporting development. A former cricketer and accomplished golfer himself, Johann was inducted into the South African Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the South African Golf Hall of Fame in 2009—a testament to his enduring influence across the sporting landscape.

Exploring the

Vineyard

Riebeeksrivier Farm is nestled on the slopes of the Kasteelberg, offering breathtaking views across the Swartland towards the iconic Table Mountain. This distinctive site boasts a unique terroir—particularly its shale-rich soils—which imparts remarkable varietal character and depth to the wines. All the vines for this blend are planted on south-facing slopes, between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, allowing for optimal sun exposure and cooling influences.

The Cinsaut and Grenache bush vines were established in 1990 and 2017 respectively, while the Shiraz—planted in 2011—is cultivated using the high-density échalas method, with each vine individually trained on its own wooden stake, promoting concentrated growth and exceptional quality.
