Rugby, Wine & Wonderful Company at the London City Sevens
A brilliant day of exhilarating rugby, exceptional wines and the kind of company that makes Sporting Wine Club so special.
What a privilege it was for Sporting Wine Club to be the wine partner of the London City Sevens, held at the historic Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) in the heart of the City of London.
The HAC is something of a sporting home from home for us. Having played cricket there too, it was wonderful to return to such a special setting — this time bringing together rugby, wine and a fantastic gathering of people from across the sporting and business worlds.
The rugby certainly delivered. With some exhilarating play on the pitch, and visiting French teams adding an extra dimension to the competition, there was plenty to keep the crowd entertained. Sevens has a wonderful energy of its own: fast, skilful, fiercely competitive and full of camaraderie.
But, of course, there was plenty happening off the pitch too.
We had a brilliant time meeting so many wonderful people, sharing stories and introducing guests to a selection of wines with their own sporting connections. It was particularly rewarding to see people discovering new favourites, tasting wines they loved and enjoying the stories behind the bottles. There is something rather special about finding a wine that sparks a conversation — and perhaps discovering that the person standing next to you shares your enthusiasm for both rugby and a great glass of red.
Our line-up celebrated some fantastic rugby and wine connections. We showcased wines from Schalk Burger, the former South African rugby captain and one of our founding winemakers; The Rupert family in Franschhoek; Lorenzetti in Bordeaux; and The Rugbyfield Vineyard, near Montpellier. Each brought its own character and story to the occasion, giving guests a taste of the people and places behind our collection.
That is what Sporting Wine Club is all about. We believe wine is about so much more than what is in the glass. It is about the people who make it, the stories that connect us and the moments when a shared interest turns a first introduction into a great conversation.
And what better setting for that than a day bringing together rugby, business, wine and friendship?
A huge thank you to everyone who came along, stopped for a taste, shared a story or simply enjoyed the atmosphere with us. We left having met some wonderful people, made some brilliant connections and enjoyed a memorable day of sport and hospitality.
We hope this is the beginning of something special — and look forward to raising a glass with many of you again soon.
