Lord Botham and Robert Willis MBE, better known as Beefy and Bob, were among the earliest supporters of Sporting Wine Club, championing the BMW brand from the very beginning when I founded the company. One of our core principles has always been to stock wines with a genuine sporting connection—and they certainly set the standard.

With the BMW range now complete (save for a few special bottles held back for auction), we’re delighted to be moving forward with Botham Family Wines. This exceptional, personally curated portfolio reflects Lord Botham’s enduring passion for wine, and we look forward to sharing it with our members and beyond.

Sporting Connection

Beefy is a sporting icon whose name is synonymous with passion, resilience, and excellence—qualities that now carry through into his wine. One of England’s greatest all-round cricketers, he thrilled fans across the globe with unforgettable performances, most famously in the legendary 1981 Ashes series. Over a career spanning more than a decade, he became one of only a few players in history to score over 5,000 runs and take more than 350 wickets in Test cricket. His legacy, however, extends far beyond the pitch. With a deep-rooted love for wine and years of hands-on involvement, Lord Botham now brings the same dedication and flair to his personally curated wine collection—crafted with character, depth, and a story in every bottle.

We hope to generate as much excitement for these remarkable wines (and spirits) as Lord Botham once did on the field—especially when the Ashes were on the line. That he now curates Australian wines feels wonderfully apt: a reminder that even the fiercest sporting rivalries can evolve into shared celebration, and that a promise made to his Aussie opponents over 40 years ago can now be toasted in every glass.

Botham Family Wines proudly showcase the passion and palate of Lord Ian Botham, drawing from two of his favourite wine-producing countries — Australia and New Zealand. With a deep appreciation for both regions’ unique terroir and winemaking heritage, Lord Botham has collaborated with two highly respected, family-owned estates to bring his vision to life.

The elegant Botham Chardonnay hails from Howard Park in Western Australia — a pioneering, multi-generational winery located in the pristine Margaret River and Great Southern regions. Renowned for its commitment to quality and expressive cool-climate wines, Howard Park is one of the country’s most celebrated producers. The Chardonnay reflects this pedigree, offering a refined balance of citrus freshness, stone fruit richness, and delicate oak — a wine that speaks to Botham’s love for structure and finesse.

In contrast, the Peerage and Botham All-Rounder Pinot Noirs are crafted in collaboration with Maude Winery, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Wanaka in Central Otago, New Zealand. Owned and operated by the highly regarded Dicey family, Maude is known for producing some of the finest Pinot Noirs in the region. These wines are elegant yet complex, showcasing vibrant red fruit, silky tannins, and the subtle earthiness that makes Central Otago Pinot so distinctive. Together, these wines represent not only world-class craftsmanship but also the perfect fusion of Lord Botham’s sporting legacy and love of exceptional wine.

When Geoff, Bob and I did our first wine “Botham, Merrill and Willis” Simon and The Sporting Wine Club worked with us. Now as our brand moves forward with more varietals, sports connections and ranges we didn’t need to think twice about who to call.
