Exciting news from Sumaridge Estate as not only is the 2019 harvest underway but they are also taking advantage of the latest winemaking techniques using gravity (rather than mechanical pumps) in the fermentation of their famous Pinot Noir. Using gravity rather than force means the extraction of colour, tannin and flavour is a more natural, gentle process resulting a more delicate, nuanced wine.
The Chardonnay has just been handpicked from the best blocks of the vineyard; selected again in the cellar, destemmed and gently crushed. Simon tastes their juice less than three hours after the grapes were picked!
To celebrate the start of the harvest – described by Sumaridge winemaker Walter Pretorius as an exciting year for both the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – and as it is the 2019 vintage we are offering a 19% discount across the two wines.
A stunning improvement on a classic Pinot Noir with exciting darker fruit notes. It combines rich flavours of black cherry with smoky spice and savouriness to deliver a luxurious wine with a silky finish.
We always knew our Sumaridge Chardonnay was world class and now The Buyer magazine’s roving contributing editor and world class chef, Roger Jones, has confirmed it!
Hemel en Aarde showcase their Chardonnay against some world class opposition. On a glorious South African summer’s day our intrepid traveller, Roger Jones provided a stellar line up of New World Chardonnay to pit against the region’s best Chardonnay.
The tasting was blind, in flights of five wines served in Riedel Chardonnay glasses, marked out of 20 and judged by 11 winemakers and nine international guests. There was little dispute in the scores with Hemel en Aarde clearly the winner on the day, the clean vibrant precision of these wines shining brightly. The purity and natural essence of these wines enthralled the judges.
This region has clearly come of age, producing superlative Chardonnay, 23 wines were tasted and here are the wines in order of score:
Ataraxia, Hemel en Aarde Ridge 2015
Sumaridge, Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley 2015
Restless River, Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley 2016
Stargazer, Tasmania 2016
Newton Johnson Family Vineyards, Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley 2017…..

The perfect combination sometimes presents itself, and the recent Rugby Captain’s dinner at Battersea Evolution was one of those, taking place exactly 15 years after the England won the Rugby World Cup. Martin Johnson, Sir Clive Woodward, Jason Leonard and George Gregan were among the many stars in attendance reminiscing on that famous night in English sport. The Matt Hampson Charity Foundation and Rugby Works (set up by Lawrence Dallaglio) were featured charities on the night who we firmly support.
Sporting Wine Club supplied wines from Sumaridge Estates – the Maritimus, Pinot Noir, Klip Kop and the Syrah. A wonderful compliment to the Seafood starter and Lamb main course and enjoyed throughout the night.
Apart from their love of sporting charities and support for African Township rugby, Sumaridge Wine Estate owners Simon and Holly have been big donors to Elephant Charities over the years and so branded their wonderful Rosé in the name of Tara, the legendary Asian Elephant.
Our exclusive partnership with the Chinese Cricket Club Restaurant in Blackfriars started last week, as does their firm commitment to our Tara!
It was fitting that I met with Hugh Wilson, ex Surrey fast bowler, Chairman of Lloyds Cricket and SWC member, to sample the first bottle of Tara Rosé to be opened at Chinese Cricket Club. A spring like sunny day was a perfect accompaniment and we look forward to a summer of Sporting Wine with Lloyds Cricket as well as a few runs, wickets and victories along the way.
You may have spotted the Moulin D’Issan (our best selling Bordeaux Blend) in the corner of the picture to celebrate Jacky Lorenzetti’s Racing 92 victory over Clermont in the quarter finals of the European Rugby’s Champions Cup.
To celebrate both this victory and the Tara branding please enjoy a 15% discount on both of these lovely wines. Please contact either Alex or Michelle to place your orders.
We assembled at a wet and windy Twickenham for the crunch England Wales 6 Nations Match and spent all day trying to keep warm. What better way for 1000 people to enjoy Hospitality than with Smart Group and surrounded by Sumaridge Red and White Blend, together with a soupçon of their wonderful Sauvignon Blanc.
It put everyone in the mood for a very feisty encounter just edged by England which certainly warmed the heart. It keeps them on track for a Grand Slam and the biggest match of all against Ireland. Sporting Wine Club will be on duty again with Sumaridge to make it a great day.
Sporting Wine Club came to Thames Ditton recently to conduct a wine tasting with our friends from Jaguar Land Rover.
Other than seeing their new Jaguar release – top quality just like our wines! – we were privileged to spend the evening with Harlequins and England Fullback, Mike Brown.
We enjoyed a fascinating insight into what makes England tick, and how under Eddie Jones the squad has emerged as Rugby World Cup contenders. With a few stories from the past from our very own Hallers, it was a lovely evening with our 4 rugby winemakers in evidence – from Italy, South Africa (x2) and France.
Francesco Cosulich, Jacky Lorenzetti, Schalk Burger and Simon and Holly Turner would have loved Mike to sample their vintages but he is in full training and was able only to admire from a distance and appreciate the bouquet. Next time!
Many thanks to David Edwards and Richard Varney from JLR who organised the evening.
Sporting Wine Club had the great privilege to help launch M Twickenham which is only a quick sprint to the home of English Rugby.
We have always wondered when it would be possible to enjoy a steak and bottle of good wine in relative comfort but within easy reach of the rugby. The Car Park or a frighteningly expensive corporate event is not for everyone and here we have a wonderful place to enjoy, both pre and post match, just opposite Twickenham railway station.
We had in attendance Gary Rees and David Pears, Rugby Internationals of yesteryear when England won two Grand Slams. Also Simon Shaw, legendary England Second Row forward.
A great evening was washed down with quality Sporting Wines provided by our Rugby winemakers. Schalk Burger, Francesco Cosulich, Simon and Holly Turner, Jacky Lorenzetti and Emmanuel Cruse are all wonderful representatives of our club combining wine, sport and charity.
We are delighted that M Twickenham is stocking some of our wines, and we look forward to a wonderful few rugby months ahead.
We are absolutely delighted to be the official wine supplier to the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay event, taking place on 21 September 2017 in the City of London.
The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is a one-of-a-kind, immersive team building experience, which uniquely takes place in the heart of financial districts around the world. Unlike other corporate events where individuals compete against one-another, this event is all about the TEAM. Train together. Race together. Celebrate together.
This is the only global corporate relay running race of its kind. Ten co-workers in each team take it in turn to run an unconventional and exciting one-mile lap through the heart of London’s financial district – all without dropping the important relay baton!
After taking on business rivals and earning bragging rights for the year, the teams kick back at the after party, enjoy complimentary hospitality and celebrating with a live DJ in the Race Village. This is the ultimate corporate team-bonding event that builds camaraderie, turning individuals into teams.
Teams pay £1,095 each to enter and the money raised goes to the charities listed here.
We are supplying Sumaridge Estate White and Red blends plus a case of Mon Rene for prize giving. Watch out for the #WeRunThisCity hashtag on twitter for pictures of our products with the winners!
Sporting Wine Club was very privileged to greet one of the world’s greatest cricketers last week. Jacques Kallis is regarded as the world’s best all rounder, and he was invited to England by Holly and Simon at Sumaridge Estates who need no introduction from the SWC!
Whether at China Tangs, Lords Cricket Ground or at the Chinese Cricket Club Restaurant on Blackfriars, members and friends of Sporting Wine Club enjoyed his wonderful company.
Jacques won’t want to choose out of the many exceptional Sumaridge wines, but the sparkling Wayfarer, Epitome Red and the world class Chardonnay brought a special smile to his face. The Maritimus White Blend went down suitably well as Simon and Holly raised super amounts of money for their Maritime Charity in SA, the NSRI. We were also privileged to help Jacques raise money for his Foundation which helps disadvantaged children in South Africa realise their cricketing dreams.
What a week! And to celebrate we want you to choose from the above quality Sumaridge specials and enjoy a 15% discount on purchases of two cases or more. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to place your orders!
