Our South African winemakers really are on a roll!
Wine expert and The Buyer Magazine editor Geoffrey Dean put Schalk Burger & Sons No. 6 on his “top 10 wines tasted in 2018” list. Saying of the wine:
One of the most affable South Africa rugby players you will meet, Schalk Burger Sr named this outstanding Rhône-style blend after the shirt number invariably worn by his Springbok son Schalk. Six varietals, of course, go into this wine – Syrah (majority), Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Pinotage and Viognier.
You can read about his full top 10 here and purchase from our full range of Schalk’s fantastic wines here.
Sometimes passionate rugby people come together – and even better if it involves wine.
The return of the great Conor Murray to action for Munster’s European victory over Castres coincided with the debut appearance of Schalk Burger’s wines at Thomond Park through the auspices of Sporting Wine Club. Two of his very best were on display, the Welbedacht Chardonnay and Pinotage and by the end of the day they had all been enjoyed by the Munster faithful – and no more to be seen!
Both Schalk Senior and Schalk Junior, great Springbok rugby players of their generation, would have fitted well into the Munster rugby family ethos: traditional values of trust, humility and loyalty but with a huge passion for their rugby and their people.
Somehow I think Schalk’s wines will be back before too long.
Thanks to Munster Rugby and good luck for the rest of your European campaign. Remember the finals are in Newcastle!
It is not often you can say ‘I was there’ when talking about English sport – Rugby World Cup 2003, Sir Nick Faldo’s Major wins, Mo Farah’s Olympic Gold Medals…… there are more but not many . We think of Botham’s 1981 Ashes heroics, or the final day at Kia Oval when the Ashes were won some eight years ago, and you can now add the moment when Alistair Cook scored his final century on his final day in Test cricket having opened his account the same way all those years ago.
I arrived at the Kia Oval midday on the Monday with perfect timing to see the great event, and the boardroom was resplendent with cricketing and sporting heroes. Also sitting comfortably on the lunch table were Schalk Burger’s Hat Trick and Cricket Pitch wines, beautiful red blends with a hint of history and plenty of class. Somehow it seemed appropriate that two of Sporting Wine Club’s best were being enjoyed in the Kia Oval Boardroom by The Surrey Committee and their guests at the same time as all Cook’s on-field heroics, a proud moment.
Graham Gooch, a noble precedent to Alistair Cook both at county and National level, had regaled Sporting Wine Club members with his three wines the Shiraz, Viognier and Rosé only the week before. He delivered some special insights to Cook’s retirement and his character as a human being and as one of our best ever cricketers. One legend doffing his cap to another.
Let us not forget Jimmy Anderson’s superlative performance as a result of which we raised another glass to one of our sporting heroes who also supplies our wine club.
Meantime in the commentary box our third winemaking couple,’Beefy’ Botham and Bob Willis were acknowledging the greatness of the day.
To celebrate this incredible performance please do make use of our SWC gift boxes which can be one, two or three bottles – in this case any cricketing mix will attract a 15% discount. As will any cricket wine orders which are two cases or more. I am sure we are all in celebratory and giving mood! Please contact Alex@sportingwineclub.com to place your orders.
The Rugby season has started but it will certainly struggle to match the drama of this Test series and the cricketing summer as a whole!!
Sporting Wine Club is a strong supporter of sporting charities and was proud to be supplying Sumaridge Wine for the 20th Anniversary of the RPA awards evening on May 9th. Even more so when they were honouring Ed Jackson and Doddie Weir as they deal with their own life challenges, having given so much on the field of rugby.
It was a wonderful and emotional evening at Battersea Evolution surrounded by sporting stars. Sumaridge White and Red Blend was universally enjoyed and featured prominently alongside the English Red Rose.
As you can see, the great Schalk Brits were in attendance on the Coutts table, who sponsored the evening – although only taking sips given the big Premiership Semi Final approaching.
Meantime, we placed a win your Weight in Sumaridge Wine, a tasting evening and a visit to Schalk Burgers wine estate into the auction. They generated thousands of pounds for this amazing charity which is committed to the physical and mental health of rugby players, and leads the way in Europe.
In support of RPA, any purchase of two cases or more of our rugby wines in the next fortnight will generate a £25 payment to the Restart Charity.
