La Grande Mélée

Bismarck & Jannie Du Plessis

£53.00

per bottle

Sporting Connection: Bismarck and Jannie, both capped more than 70 times for the Springboks, have combined to build a rugby pitch in the middle of the vineyard. On that pitch certain vines have been grown and been used to create the RugbyField Vineyard wine ‘La Grande Melée’ (The Big Scrum). This project will be replicated around the world – watch this space! We have also combined with the vineyard to raise funds for the Firefighters Charity (Oeuvre des Pupilles des Pompiers) which looks after the children and families of deceased firefighters, of whom one died when combating a blaze on the vineyard. The story bottles all the values we hold dear. Bismarck du Plessis has the highest quality rugby branding you can imagine, a veteran of three World Cups.

Tasting Notes: Dark black/ink colour. Powerful nose of black berries, cherries and moka. On the palate, black fruit aromas dominate, supported by a clean and beautiful tannic structure. While being dense, the mouthfeel remains soft, delicate and full of expression, leading to a long and surprisingly fresh finish.

Description

Specificity: A very thin limestone layer, a unique thing in the Costieres de Nîmes region, goes through the RFV block, creating that fresh feeling this wine offers on the pa- late, while being still powerful.

Blend: this first vintage 2018 is made out of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache.

Vinification: Hand harvest. The grapes are fully destemed. Fermentation for about 9 days at 26-27°c, then 28- 29°c when the fermentation ends. Very short pump overs, 3 to 5 minutes, about 3 to 4 times/day.

Objective: enhancing the power, while keeping that fresh finish (slightly minty). Macération post-fermentation for 10 to 15 days on skins to define the wine’s final structure

Ageing: 12 months in oak barrels. Those barrels are not flame heated but steam heated. This type of barrels avoid giving a oaky/toasted taste to the wine. The steam technic preserves the wine’s freshness and help enhancing minerality.
