Celebrating 50 Years of the Richmond Heavies

Richmond Rugby Club have joined forces with leading winemakers Schalk Burger & Sons to create a bespoke celebration blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Grown and bottled by former Springbok player Schalk Burger on behalf of Sporting Wine Club, this was the perfect choice to celebrate 50 years of The Heavies.

We are very proud of this initiative and to be raising funds for this amazing club and for the wider cause. It’s also the latest in a list of wonderful wines made by Schalk Burger at his Welbedacht Estate.

Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Merlot 50%

Tasting Notes: A beautiful deep red colour which leads into a very rich and robust Cabernet Sauvignon blended with a delicate and slightly fruitier Merlot. As both cultivars exhibit dark fruit flavours the combination amplifies blackcurrant, black cherry, cigar box, spices, and herbs with layers of raspberry, cassis and mocha. This is balanced with a good layer of tannins.

Food Pairing: Appetizers will be olives, cheese, mushrooms, roasted beef salad, ham and green figs, bacon-wrapped blue cheese stuffed dates. For the main course pair with steak, a ‘Schalk’ burger, grilled lamb, roasted chicken, braised pork, beef ribs, and meat pasta dishes.
