The '9-3'

THE 9-3 STORY

October 31, 1972 - a day that has gone down in Welsh rugby folklore and the greatest in the proud history of Llanelli RFC and the Scarlets. The legendary All Blacks arrived in the West Wales town with a fearsome reputation as the greatest side on the planet, but in front of a passionate 20,000 crowd crammed into Stradey Park, the Scarlets celebrated their finest ever triumph. The 9-3 victory prompted euphoric scenes that saw captain Delme Thomas hoisted aloft by the fans. As Max Boyce famously wrote, it was the day the pubs ran dry.

TASTING NOTES

Concentrated aromas of fresh cut lime, passionfruit and a touch of red currant combine with a textured, sweet fruited and very succulent palate with mango, ripe lemon, and pink grapefruit flavours.

The Mohua Sauvignon Blanc style is designed to have the typical Marlborough stylistic characteristics, however due to the source of fruit being only the Wairau Valley with a significant influence from the coastal Lower Wairau subregion,  the wine is in the more tropical spectrum. The concept being the wine is equally enjoyed with or without food. Being predominantly Pinot Noir producers we took an approach to learning about the style of fruit from across the Marlborough region and selected two subregions and have both estate vineyards in two of these and long term grower relationships in each to form the Mohua blend.

SPORTING CONNECTION

Lindsay McLachlan refereed internationally in the 90’s. For those with good memories, he had control of the England v Scotland game in 1994 when England won in the last minute – McLachlan awarded a last-minute penalty when the Scots transgressed – again! 15-14 was the final score and England won a famous victory. Long before he blew the whistle to kick off his first test match, Lindsay had a passion for farming and winemaking and Mohua Wines was founded in 2009 to create exceptional wines from some of New Zealand’s highest quality regions. The McLachlan family’s focus is on merging that vision with sustainable practices to craft wines that capture the essence of their environment, while improving the land that creates them.

THE CHARITY

Mohua Wines Conservation - named in honour of a small colourful bird that can only be found in the pristine and majestic forests of New Zealand’s South Island. Once abundant, the Mohua are now classified as an endangered species, surviving in only remote areas. Mohua Wines is committed to helping ensure these stunning choristers flourish and regain their rightful place among New Zealand's unique fauna. Mohua Wines are proud to contribute both financially and with hands on assistance, partnering with like-minded organisations in conservation initiatives to protect New Zealand’s native bird species.

The Story

In 1872, a group of young enthusiasts met on Easter weekend to establish Llanelli RFC. The rest as they say is history.

Tasting Notes

Fitting for a 150 year old celebration this blend of Merlot, Mourvèdre and Syrah comprises two of the oldest cultivars, being Syrah and Mourvèdre. This combination of ripe black fruit flavours, peppery and spicy notes of savoury black olives coupled to the great blending qualities of the plummy and raspberry Merlot has created a wine that could be enjoyed now or cellared for 5 years. This wine was grown. made and bottled on the Welbedacht Wine Estate by Springbok rugby player
Schalk Burger.

Food pairing

This wine is the ideal pairing for red meats, any game and venison, as well as spicy foods.
